CERT WORKSHOP APPLICANTS ONLY ============================= Which area of security interests you? ------------------------------------- What security interventions have you experienced? ------------------------------------------------- How do you intend to use the knowledge gained at the workshop? -------------------------------------------------------------- ROLE IN NATIONAL NETWORKING ACTIVITIES ====================================== A description of your current employer, your position, your duties and responsibilities, and how they relate to current and future data networking activities in your country* ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I currently work for Datasphir Solutions. It is a firm that uses its expertise in Linux and Open Source to deliver products and services in the areas of networking, security, communications, collaboration and custom software development, especially in Research and Education Networking. My current position is a Unix Network and System Administrator. My job description is to provide Unix Network support using Opensource OS (Bifrost, Packetfence, Vyatta, Pfsense, Mikrotik), provide and maintain an Online Video conferencing system, moodle administrator Peoples-Uni (http://courses.peoples-uni.org), web administrator Peoples-Uni (http://www.peoples-uni.org), provide and maintain Virtualization environments, provide Web solutions using CMS (Drupal, Moodle, Redmine, Fengoffice etc), Voice Over Internet Protocol implementation (Asterisk & FreePBX with GSM cards) as well as the installation and maintenance of Unix Server (FTP, DHCP, DNS, MAIL, SAMBA, WEB) I have also assisted in internship training programmes. I am a also member of the Eko-konnect networking team. Eko-konnect is about connecting all Higher education institutions in Lagos state together. At the moment, the pilot phase which connects four selected institutions in the state has been completed and we are exploring the possibilities of doing so to all institutions in the state. Looking at the bigger picture, all institutions can be connected together from state formed clusters and these institutions can share resources amongst themselves. A brief description of your computing and networking environment (operating systems, networking software, modems, etc.), including the connectivity of your organization to the Internet and your country's connectivity to the international Internet* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My computing environment could be described as a mixed environment. I come across different networking devices, operating system and networking applications. Despite all that, I particularly am specialized in opensource Os and have used a few opensource networking softwares. Redhat, centos, ubuntu, solaris, bifrost, are a few of the operating systems I have used for different purposes. Vyatta (quagga), mikrotik, pfsense, packetfence will fall into the networking applications I am familiar with. My duties are geared towards research and education networking. In most institutions I have worked in, I have provided networking solutions with opensource technologies. Using the Eko-konnect project as an example, all institutions are connected to the internet exchange point. There, we intend to have an option where these connected institutions can collectively buy bandwidth at a lower price and share. Scope of your institution (check all categories that apply)* ------------------------------------------------------------ Academic Network Provider : Approximate number of full time staff at your institution* ---------------------------------------------------------- 4000 How your training and current work prepare and qualify you for the track you wish to attend* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My job duties and experience as a network administrator for Veritas University, Adamawa state University, University of Lagos, and most recently Eko-konnect puts me in position to enhance my knowledge in the Network Infrastructure track. How you expect to use the knowledge you gain at the workshop after you return to your country* ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eko-konnect hold periodic workshops amongst its connected institutions networking teams. As a member of Eko-konnect networking team, the knowledge gotten from the Afnog workshop will go a long way during the Eko-konnect workshops. If you have previously attended AfNOG or INET Workshops for Developing Countries Year and track you attended --------------------------- A precise description of how you have used the training you have received in the past ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The significant advances in networking which have occurred in your country specifically because of your knowledge and effort --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FINANCIAL INFORMATION ====================== Are you are requesting financial aid from the AfNOG Workshop for attending the workshop and meetings, or for travel costs?* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Requested aid to cover the attendance fees. Explain why you are asking for financial assistance. How will your organisation and your country benefit from your training? What other sources of funding have you approached, and what were the results? ------------------------------------------------------------------- Attending this training no doubt will improve my knowledge on networking and affect how I put the knowledge into use. As a member of the Eko-konnect networking team, adding to my networking knowledge will go along way in helping me perform my job efficiently. Eko-konnect project aims at coordinating and supporting interoperability between research organizations and higher education institutions (HEI) networks in the Lagos area. There are plans to extend this project to other states, and have networks of all these state networks of HEIs in the country. Clearly, the country seeks to benefit from this project as connceted HEIs can foster collaborative research to support the development of content, learning and technical capacity in these connecting institutions. Attending the track improves my knowledge in the networking world. As a networking engineer in the Eko-konnect I will need this knowledge to be able to provide networking solutions while dispensing my duties. Eko-konnect another source of funding for the workshop, have agreed to support with 52.5% of the expenses. How will the finances be paid?
